Crackfic, chapter 6

In this chapter, Adam and Muriel meet.

Muriel rubbed her temples, sighing. When she'd agreed to take Raphael's job for some time she hadn't guessed it would be this much work. Well, there wasn't really much of work, but what little there wasseemed to be that much harder. Although Uriel was apparently still unsure about her, at least she allowed her to examine her, and that was good. Belial, however, seemed to be set against her, leading to her finally telling the demon to simply stay away if she didn't want help with keeping herself and her baby healthy. Belial had told she would indeed stay away, and, if needed, rather seek the help of human doctors than her. This upset her quite a deal, but, well, it was Belial's decision.

Aziraphale had vaguely said that Belial was currently set against about all angels aside from Gabriel and, possible, Aziraphale himself. She could understand that in a way -- after all, Belial was having an angel's child; she had every reason to fear Heaven's interference. But she was a healer! She only wanted to help! What reason was there for the demon to avoid her?

Ah, well. There wasn't much she could do about it right now.

With another sigh, she turned back to her papers. She could just as well get something useful done.

Adam paused for a moment before knocking on the door. Hearing an invitation to enter, he opened the door and stepped into the hospital wing.

"Hi, Muriel," he said. "How're you dealing with the stuff here?"

Muriel blinked a bit as she took in the unfamiliar face. "You're... Adam, right?" she asked. "Raphael told me about you..." She sighed then. "Belial refuses to let me give her any kind of medical care. Uriel isn't as set against me, but she is unsure about me. There are strong emotions all around the place, too. Uriel... she has some kind of an emotional problem, does she not?"

"Some disorder, yeah," Adam admitted, knowing she already suspected as much. "Dunno what exactly it is, though. Somethin' to do with emotions, though." He then turned slightly worried. "It's not too much to you or anythin', is it?"

The angel shook her head. "No, not too much," she said. "A bit difficult, yes, but nothing I can't handle." She gave him a studying glance. "What exactly has happened to Uriel here, though? I can't claim to have truly known her before she arrived here, but I would have noticed if her problems had been as bad as they are now. Her aura is practically screaming about mental problems."

"Many things." Adam sighed, taking a seat. "Let's see... Well, at first he had this one-night thin' with Pestilence. His mind suppressed it or somethin', though, so he didn't remember it. Made Pestilence quite upset, though. Then, there was Michael's Fall... He tried ta kill himself then, but Odin saved him an' adopted him as his brother. That prob'bly gave him back his will to live, to be cared for by someone. Then Pestilence talked to him, and they became lovers in secret... Then, all went well. Aziraphale got discorporated at one point, which made him upset, but Pestilence helped him ta get over it. Then, however, Odin found out about Pestilence... and beat him almost dead, tellin' him to stay away from his brother. Uriel got upset, and Odin took ‘im to a bar to comfort him or sumthin'... So, one thin' led to another, and the next mornin' Uriel woke up female. Some time later, he turned female again and found out she was pregnant."

Most of this she could have found out from others, like Raphael. The Pestilence thing wasn't exactly common knowledge, but it was important if she were to figure out how to best help Uriel. Adam doubted, however, that Uriel would have wanted him to reveal the baby's father, so he didn't say anything about it, however much emotional turmoil it might have had the angel in.

"I see." Muriel nodded slowly. "Adding to that a mental disorder... I do wonder what it might be. The suicide attempt certainly marks depression at least. And a one night stand? With Pestilence? Oh, my. That certainly doesn't sound like anything Uriel would normally do, according to anything I know about her..." She frowned a bit. "Inclination to sexual adventures, then... Tell me, has she ever seemed to be on an oddly elevated mood, or behaved in a way she wouldn't normally? Like done something very childish?"

"Well, there was this snowball fight back before Christmas," Adam said vaguely. "He kept laughin' almost all of the time. If I remember right Michael had ta carry ‘im into his room afterwards ‘cuz he was laughin' so much."

"Clear mania. Some form of bipolar disorder, then." She had figured it out, then. Well, it didn't surprise him much -- it only made sense that she would specialize in illnesses that had something to do with emotions. "I'll do my best to keep her in control to avoid need of medication. If she gets bad enough an episode, however, she may require either medication, which I don't like because of the possible fetal disfigurements, or hospitalization to keep her from hurting herself or others. I should be able to keep that from happening if there's not too much disturbance, but if something major happens that causes strong emotions in all or even most of the Manor inhabitants I can't do much to help her."

Adam nodded seriously. He did not exactly like the sound of this. "Something major" seemed to be the most common thing to happen in the Manor.

For now, however, he would have to trust Muriel to be able to help.

Uriel frowned at her mirror. Her stomach was now clearly rounded, almost too much so to be concealed by the robe. Any day now her condition would be obvious to anybody she ran into. That was not really something she looked forward to.

She'd tried to take a taller from but failed. She didn't know whether this was because of her pregnancy or just a usual effect; after all, she had never tried to alter the height of her corporation before. Considering that Raphael always was so small even though it seemed to bother him, though, she suspected height wasn't one of the aspects of appearance one could affect. So, she was stuck in this tiny form, which would make her stomach appear even bigger.

Considering her usual luck, she would probably have twins. She wasn't sure, but sometimes the beginning of an aura inside her flickered in a way that seemed to suggest that there were actually two of them. Or perhaps she would have just a very big baby. Either way, she just knew she was going to be so big be the end of her pregnancy that she could hardly even move about. Nothing else could be possible, not when it was her in question.

A sigh escaped her lips. Why couldn't anything be easy just for once?

Loki lay on his couch, staring at the ceiling. He'd noticed earlier that day that the angel was now clearly showing. Well, it was about the time for that. He'd begun to wonder.

He hated the fact that Uriel seemed to be taking up more of Odin's attention than he was. The idiotic angel was stealing his brother, and he wouldn't have it.

He would have to find a way to get rid of Uriel.
